Tending the Fire, Part 6: Art as Oracle

Most of us have been taught to look outside ourselves for answers.

We seek advice.

Read books.

Listen to experts.

Ask friends what they think we should do.

There is certainly wisdom in learning from others.

But there are times when no one else can tell us what is right for us.

The answer must come from within.

The challenge is that our inner wisdom doesn't always speak in words.

Often it speaks through images.

Sensations.

Dreams.

Symbols.

Metaphors.

This is one reason I think of art-making as a kind of oracle.

Not because it predicts the future.

Not because it possesses magical powers.

But because it helps reveal what we already know, yet have not consciously recognized.

When we create without a predetermined outcome, surprising images often emerge.

A doorway.

A river.

A bird.

A storm.

A garden.

A bridge.

These images frequently carry meaning beyond what we initially intended.

They become mirrors, reflecting something important about our lives.

The image speaks.

The question becomes:

Are we willing to listen?

Again and again, I have watched clients discover wisdom they didn't know they possessed.

Not because I gave them answers.

Not because the artwork contained hidden messages.

But because the creative process bypassed habitual thinking and allowed deeper knowing to emerge.

This is one of the reasons I love expressive life coaching. Rather than telling people who they should become, it creates space for them to discover the wisdom that already lives within them.

The image becomes a conversation.

A relationship.

An invitation.

As an expressive arts facilitator, I have the privilege of witnessing these conversations unfold. Time after time, people surprise themselves with insights they never could have reasoned their way toward.

This is also why creativity coaching is so different from simply solving problems. The goal isn't to provide answers. The goal is to cultivate curiosity, reflection, and a relationship with your own inner knowing.

For many women, this becomes a deeply transformative experience. Creative coaching for women isn't about becoming a better artist. It's about becoming a more authentic participant in your own life.

The role of the oracle is not to tell us what to do.

Its role is to help us see more clearly.

And often that is enough.

If your life were speaking to you in metaphor right now, what image might it use?

A crossroads?

A cocoon?

A wildfire?

A winding path?

Spend a few minutes drawing that image and notice what it has to say.
